Since 1505, right until the country gained independence in 1948, Sri Lanka was ruled by the Portuguese, Dutch and finally the British. Although the colonizers are long gone, their influences can be experienced in local cuisine, music, language and also in our architecture. Probably the most prominent testament to this are the sprawling tea gardens, villas, bungalows and the tea culture that introduced Ceylon to many across the seas.
Sri Lanka is home to an extensive range of wildlife, and fortunately so, these can be spotted in National Parks and nature reserves scattered around the country. Although and Wilpattu are the better known ones for jungle safaris to stalk leopards and spot parading peacocks, sunbathing crocs, and deer in abundance, there are a few other Parks that are definitely worth a stop. Kumana and Bundala are known for their migratory and indigenous bird population, and Mannerly offers the spectacle of the ‘elephant gathering’ where numerous herds of elephants congregate near the reservoir during July to October. The Udawalawe National Park, Gal Oya National Park, the fascinating Singharaja Rainforest, and Horton Plains with its cloud forest are a few other fascinating wildlife sanctuaries.
